MIDDLE SCHOOL Field Trips This Week

We love having the opportunity to take our learning out into the world during this time of year, and are planning a handful of outings for the middle school group next week. Please see below for details.

Tuesday & Wednesday: Short trips will take place during our joint Science and Humanities "Living Landscapes" unit, and we'll be out of the building from around 9:20-11:05.

Ron and Gabe plan to split the middle school into two groups. One group will join Ron in the Bald Hill woods for tree identification work, invasive removal, and some light trail maintenance. The other group will join Gabe on a walk into Bellows Falls to view one of only two petroglyph sites in the state of Vermont. On the following day, the groups will switch.

Thursday & Friday: Field trips are part of our annual special grade group programming. On Thursday we will visit the Vermont Institute of Natural Sciences (VINS) up in Quechee, followed by exploring Quechee Gorge.

On Friday we plan to visit the Brattleboro Museum & Art Center, followed by mini golf in Dummerston.

Both Thursday and Friday we will leave Compass promptly after breakfast (9:20) and return in time for 3:15 dismissal. Students have signed up for bag lunches for both days, though some plan to bring their own. Chaperones will include Ron, Gabe, Kellie, Nicole, and Cora.

Please contact any of us with any questions.

Thank you!

Friday's Cookies Fundraiser Starts Tomorrow (9/22)

It is a long-standing tradition that the junior class has the opportunity to travel. In order for this to be accessible to all no matter a family's income, we will be doing numerous fundraisers.

Our first event will be FRIDAY FUNDRAISER COOKIES! Yes, COOKIES.

We will sell a half dozen of Cher's famous chocolate chip cookies and her yummy oatmeal raisin at pick up. For every $5 you will get 1/2 dozen cookies.

We would love a rough estimate of how many cookies to make. Please see or email Louise (louise.hodson@compass-school.org) with your preferred flavor and a count of how many you want.

THANK YOU!!

The Junior Travelers

Dungeons and Dragons at Compass starts this Friday

The Dungeons and Dragons Club at Compass will meet for the first time this coming Friday, September 22 as part of this year’s after-school enrichment programming. This week and future Friday meetings will run from 3:15 pm to 4:15 pm leaving room for participants to make the end of day bus, if needed.

Gabe Morse will be the Dungeon Master (DM) and “coach”.

All students are welcome to participate.

Open House & Potluck Dinner this Thursday (9/21)

A kind reminder that this Thursday evening from 5pm to 6:30pm, Compass is hosting a community gathering at the school.  The middle school students had a successful day of foraging some wild edibles and will be preparing those for consumption that night.

Cher, Compass School's executive chef, will also be putting out a dish or two.  If you would like to contribute something to the community table, please feel free to bring something ready to serve to our guests.

This is a casual event, no formal presentations, just some socializing and conversation.  The teachers, staff, and I all hope to see you.

Compass Update: No School for Friday, September 15

Good afternoon,

The good news is the plumbing issue is fixed, yet tomorrow (Friday, September 15) we are going to be closed in an abundance of caution.

The next step needs to be sanitizing and deep cleaning of the physical space. I have a phone call into some cleaning services, yet if anyone knows of someone that can help us out at a moment’s notice, please give them my cell phone: 802-238-5760.

For now, monitor email and the school's website for updates.  We are planning to re-open Monday, September 18.

Thanks for being flexible.  Hope you all have a nice long weekend.

Absences, Attendance, and Staying Healthy

Just a quick note to remind all that if you are not feeling well (have the sniffles and /or sore throat), if you have COVID, or have been in close contact with someone who is contagious with this virus, please stay home.  There is a reported uptick in COVID cases in the area, so best to play it safe and stay home when necessary.

If you are going to be absent today or this week, please email me at kendra.rickerby@compass-school.org.   This is a temporary method of communicating absences.  At the moment, I am not able to access the office email addresses that were established prior to my hiring so best to just reply here.

Stay tuned for a new approach -- which I will have in place by next week.  Thanks all for your patience with the transition between Heads of School.

Be well,

Kendra
